Cave, Alfred A. “ABUSE OF POWER: ANDREW JACKSON AND THE INDIAN REMOVAL ACT OF 1830.” Historian 65 (2003) 1330-1353. Academic Search Premier. EBSCO. Brigham Young University. Nov 19. 2008 https://www.epnet.com.

“Cherokee Nation v. the State of Georgia, 1831.” United States Supreme Court. 1831. 19 Nov. 2008. http://www.mtholyoke.edu/acad/intrel/cherokee.htm.

This is a Supreme Court Case. It was between the Cherokee Nation and the State of Georgia. The Supreme Judge ruled that he could not take the case because although the Indian lands were sovereign nations, they were within the boundaries of the United States so they didn’t fall under the jurisdiction laid out in the Constitution.
I will use this site to help explain about the history of the Indians and provide background on the Indian People. It will help to set a base for the history. This case was important and will be able to help the reader understand where the Native Americans are coming from better.

Garrisson, Tim Alan. “Worcester V. Georgia (1832).” The New Georgia Encyclopedia. Publication 27 Apr. 2004. 19 Nov. 2008. <http://www.georgiaencyclopedia.org/nge/Article.jsp?id=h-2720>.

Another Supreme Court Case. Worcester was a missionary that served among the Cherokee people. Georgia made laws that made this illegal and put him in jail. He brought it before the Supreme Court and won. The judge ruled that the laws that Georgia had made were unconstitutional.
I will use this just like the last case. It is important to understand the history of the Indians to know from where they are coming and why they have certain views. This case was an important case in Indian history. Gatewood, Doreen Etelbah.

I will use this paper to draw a lot of my facts and ideas from. It is a well written paper and is one of few things I found that talked about the subject of hunting on the Indian reservation in the White Mountain area. I will draw a lot of the history of the White Mountain hunting program from here.

This has some good facts about hunting and especially about trophy hunting. It talks about record books and from where the records come from. It is from EBSCO so it is a good, reliable source.

I would use this to just get some facts about trophy elk. I would see how many trophy elk have been killed in the White Mountain area and inn Arizona in general. I will present these facts to show how that area is great for trophy elk hunting.

This site is a anti-hunting site. It gives arguments of why hunting should not be allowed. It goes through point by point the many negatives of hunting, trying to persuade the reader to be anti-hunting.

I will use this site to present what people believe to be the negatives of the sport. I will analyze them and see if they are respectable. This site is perfect and will help bring in both sides of the argument.

The more I know the better I will be able to present the topic. This is a good way to understand more, a direct speech on the subject from the President himself. I will maybe use quotes from this so that the reader is able to understand Andrew Jackson better.
The Trail of Tears and the Forced Relocation of the Cherokee Nation. <http://www.nps.gov/nr/twhp/wwwlps/lessons/118trail/118trail.htm>.

This is a government website that talks about the Trail of Tears. It helps the reader understand the subject better. It has many facts and names of important people. The Trail of Tears is a very heated subject that many don’t like to talk about.
I will quote numbers and important people from the site. It is a key puzzle piece to understanding the history of the Native Americans. I can not talk about Indian History without talking about the Trail of Tears.

Thus far on the research paper I have picked my topic which is Native Americans and to bring the environment aspect into my paper I am going to write about the hunting regulations that exist on the White Mountain Apache Indian Reservation. I go there every year to fish, but hunting is what most people want to do there. More trophy elk come out of that area than any other area of its size in North America. I have heard many times people say from my hometown "Why can't us white folk hunt on that reservation without paying an arm and a leg?"
As far as research goes, I have researched mainly about the history of Indian Reservations and how they came into being. I have researched about the Trail of Tears and why the Indians were treated as they were. I have done some research, but not much, on the actual history of the hunting on the Apache Indian Reservation.
I plan on doing a history of the Indians and how they were treated in the past, mainly in the 1800's. This will show how they became sovereign areas and were able to make their own laws. Then I will show how this happened all across the united States. Then i will show that The Indian Tribe passed its own laws on the hunting in its territory and charged a lot of money to do so. Then I will end by saying how this affects and affected the environment and teh people around that area. I am a big procrastinator and have not done as much research as I should have at this point. I plan on using many sources and researching more.

Our group chose to focus on the people that like excitement and the outdoors. We are going to focus on the activities available around the Provo area such as the ski resorts, the national parks, hot springs, hiking trails, and camping locations. We believe that these are the biggest attractions that BYU has to offer. we are also going to include the education because that is important too. Getting a good college education while still being able to do many outdoor activities is a great combination. The mountains and the scenery and what it offers are some of the greatest attractions BYU has to offer. We will include pictures and make it an attention grabbing brochure filled with excitement and adventure. The other audiences we could have focused on were the sports people, the honor code lovers, or the computer science groupies.

I have learned a lot about audience this semester. It is amazing how each part of the triangle affects the other two parts. By knowing the audience and who I want to focus on then I can change my message and voice to be persuasive to those kinds of people. The audience is why we write in the first place. We write so that someone will read it, and we want someone to read it to try and persuade them on some way of thinking. Knowing who is going to read it and what their way of thinking might be enables the author to adapt his writing to be the most persuasive as possible. This makes writing so much easier. In the future I will be able to write better papers because I will be able to know who I am writing my paper for. By adapting my writing style to specific people, it will take more affect on them. In my future classes I will be able to make stronger arguments because I will know what my message is and how I want to get that message across. Rhetoric is very important in every day of our lives, especially in the workplace. In the future, knowing who my audience is will enable me to be able to get a better job and hopefully make more money. The audience is the key. I don't talk the same to my grandparents as I do to my friends, so I wouldn't write about the same subject the same to two different audiences. The audience dictates how I want to present my message.

- What are the injustices that both parties have?
- How did the reservations begin?
- What was the cause of reservations?
- Can these restrictions and injustices be changed?

DEFINITION
- What is an Indian reservation?
- What are the restrictions on fishing and camping on these reservations?
- What kind of injustices exist?

QUALITY
- How serious are the restrictions?
- How important are the restrictions?
- Are the restrictions just?
- Are the restrictions bad, right, wrong, and have they changed over time?

PROCEDURE
- Should restrictions be more severe or more lenient?
- How should they be carried out and enforced?
- Should the National or State governments be involved?
- What are some possible solutions that would benefit both parties, Indians and whites?

Right now I will be writing about a place where my friend and I go every year to fish. It is called Black River. It is located on an Indian reservation. Every year we have to get special camping and fishing permits that are expensive, more expensive than normal permits because they are within the Apache Indian Reservation. I want to see the cause and the effect of these reservations and how we can improve the Indian reservations. How did they turn out the way they are and why. Why can’t the non-Indians use the land also for our benefit? I will look into these questions and see if there is a solution that would improve things for both sides. Mainly I will be looking at the fishing and camping aspect of the reservations and a bit of hunting also. All should be able to use the resources and beauty of the land. I will research and see how it came to be that way and how we can use the land and share it so everyone can see the beauty that exists there.

Nov 3 Assignment - My thoughts

Coming into this year I had always heard of rhetoric but truly didn’t understand the word or the concept. Through this class and the assignments I have come to understand better the meaning and the use of rhetoric not only in advertising but in our daily lives. The rhetorical analysis was not the easiest thing I have done. It is difficult to critically analyze another person’s writing and see how their style and techniques worked or didn’t work.
This assignment was not the most joyful thing I have ever done. It took lots of thinking and just wasn’t very fun. It was boring as I went through the paper and listed the ethos, pathos, logos, audience, message, and speaker. Then writing the paper was difficult as I always like to put my own personal spin on things, but in a rhetorical analysis, this is very difficult. It just seemed like a really boring paper to me.
Although the work of writing this paper was tedious and not entertaining, I did learn a lot. I have learned how to recognize rhetoric and how commercials, articles, and everything that tries to persuade always focuses on a few major things. I can now identify those things as they relate to Ethos, Pathos, and Logos. I can see what things can work and what things don’t work at all. It has changed the way I look at life as I see what people do to try to persuade me to do what they want.
While I was writing the paper I remember thinking “How am I supposed to write 4 to 6 pages on this?” But as I began writing and really breaking down the article it seemed to come easier. I wrote my paper on imagery and how he used that to his advantage. The most difficult thing was saying that imagery either worked or didn’t work without using those exact words. I didn’t want to just say “using imagery in this way worked and persuaded the audience.” Or “Using this imagery didn’t work.” I need to still improve my paper and practice my critical analyzing skills.
I have also learned that I personally use rhetoric in my daily life. Any time I want anything I use rhetoric. I use different types of rhetoric on different people, depending on their personality. This shows that the audience plays a big role in the Ethos, Pathos, and Logos that the speaker uses to try to persuade the audience. I have seen the rhetoric triangle in my life and in all things. I can hardly watch a commercial now without thinking, “What is the message, speaker, and audience? What does he want me to do and what is he doing to persuade me to do it? Does it work?” This could get a little annoying as I am trying to relax and enjoy some college football on Saturday.
Rhetoric is a great tool that I will use for the rest of my life. Knowing how people try to persuade will help me in all aspects of my life. It was difficult to write 4 pages on somebody else’s article, but I learned a lot from doing it.

Article

The Assignment that I chose is about the drilling in Alaska. It is entitled “When Will We Realize That We Can’t Drill Our Way To Cheap Gas?” It takes the stand against drilling in Alaska and uses many forms of rhetoric to argue its point. It talks about the history of Alaska and how this isn’t a quick fix solution to our problems.
I chose this article because it caught my attention. It is something that is a hot topic right now with the price of gas so high. It interested me and I wanted to see the opposite viewpoint. I disagree with this article so it makes me look for mistakes and other errors that much harder. It is a well written article that uses emotion and logic to try and persuade the reader that drilling in Alaska will not help the American Economy.
This article was also the best article that I found during my search. Other articles were just too long or too short or they were just informative and didn’t try to persuade the reader in any way. This article has a nice balance and takes a stand on a certain topic; that of the arctic drilling. It is an article that is fun to read and is fun to look at the reasoning that the writer uses. I disagree with him so it is easy to see and pick out the flaws.
I found this article on the internet using google search. I just searched “Alaska and drilling” and this came up. It wasn’t the first article I found, nor the last, but it was the best one that I found.
The library instruction was a little bit helpful, but I thought it was all unnecessary. Maybe a little instruction would be good, but it was just way too much. Doing the tutorial online wasn’t all that great at first, and then going to the library to get the same instruction is just overkill. It helped a little, but it went a little too far and I lost interest and started to go to espn.com to look up the sports news because I had already done the stuff she went over in the online tutorial.

Watch this

Skittles

Who wouldn’t love to turn everything into Skittles? Well I guess a diabetic wouldn’t, but I should would. Or so I thought before I watched this commercial. In this commercial, everything a man touches turns into skittles. He is at a desk and a girl comes up with a guy and tells him to show the guy how everything he touches turns into Skittles. He touches the stapler and it turns into skittles. The guy says “That’s awesome!” The Skittles man then says how it isn’t awesome, how he can’t hold his newborn baby boy, can’t feed or dress himself, how he shook a man’s hand and he turned into Skittles. He finishes by saying, “Yeah, that is pretty awesome I guess.” The phone then rings and he goes to answer it. It, of course, turns into Skittles. He then gets angry and hits the desk, turning the desk into Skittles.
The speaker is the Skittles company. They are trying to get people to buy and eat Skittles, or as they put it “Taste the Rainbow.” The audience is the younger generation. I would say teenagers up to the people in their 40’s. This commercial uses humor to make you want to buy the product, but the humor in the video is a little complicated, yet a child would still think it was funny. What child wouldn’t think it was just amazing to see a man turn a stapler into a bunch of Skittles? Now that is just awesome. So in this aspect it catches the younger kid’s attention, yet the humor is advanced enough to get the middle aged people to laugh.
The Skittles Company is an authority in itself. It has been around for many years and everyone knows what Skittles are. Using the slogan “Taste the Rainbow” is a slogan that everyone knows. If your were to say this in a crowd, everyone would automatically think those small, sweet, colorful things we all call Skittles.
Also I would say that the magic in this commercial is an authority also. Changing objects into Skittles is something that grabs your attention. Magic makes you wonder, “How does he do that?” and brings awe and wonder. That is why magic plays a key role in this commercial. It brings a mysticism that nothing else can bring.
This commercial mainly plays off of emotions. The audience feels a mix of emotions during the ad. First of all we feel awe and amazement as the man turns a stapler into skittles. Like the guy says, “That’s awesome!” I thought as I watched it, “I wish I could do that.”
Then we are taken to a mixture of emotions where we don’t know whether we should laugh or feel sorry for the Skittles guy. He goes on to tell how he can’t hold his newborn little boy, or he can’t feed or dress himself, or how he met a man on the bus and shook his hand. The man will never see his family again, because he was turned into Skittles. He then says, “I guess that is pretty awesome.”
After answering the phone and turning the phone into Skittles, the man gets angry and hits the desk, sending Skittles flying everywhere from the desk turning into millions of Skittles. This is just a perfect ending. I broke out in laughter after this. Normally, hearing these things, a person would feel sorry for the guy because he couldn’t have a normal life. The commercial plays on this perfectly, making it humorous because it is unreal. No one could really turn things into Skittles. That is what makes the commercial, playing on the emotions that would normally make a person sad, but turning it into comedy.
As far as Logos, there really isn’t any reasoning to this commercial. The only reasoning I could find is that everyone would love to turn things into Skittles at the touch of a finger. But then again that doesn’t really make any sense at all. Well I guess all things don’t have to make sense.
I believe this commercial was very effective in using comedy to draw on the emotions of a person to get their attention. Then with the slogan at the end they say “Touch the Rainbow, Taste the Rainbow.” Using the authority that Skittles brings. I wanted to go out and eat Skittles after seeing the desk turn into Millions of Skittles. “Taste the Rainbow.”

Assignment 2

When I enrolled for an English class this semester I really was dreading it. I don’t especially like to write papers and the thought of college English has always scared me. When we received our first assignment, the Opinion Editorial, I thought it would be just another paper I would have to force myself to sit down and get through. I have never been very good at communicating what I have had on my mind. There seems to be a road block between my thoughts and feelings and getting them across to others. My mission helped me with that and now as I learn about Ethos, Pathos, and Logos I am beginning to understand how communication and rhetoric really work in our everyday lives.
Sitting in class one day as we learned about our Opinion Editorial, Mr. Keeley said something that struck me. He said, “Write about something that interests you.” I have learned how important it is to write about something that I am interested about. In the past I have had to write about many topics that I had little or absolutely no interest about. I am a huge procrastinator, especially when it comes to writing papers. I have spent many long hours the night before a paper was due, loading up on sugar and just forcing myself to finish.
This paper was different because I was excited to write about it. When Mr. Keeley said that we should choose something that fits within our interests, it was very easy to pick a topic; Sports. And what has been more controversial in BYU sports than the Washington vs. BYU game on September 7 of this year. Everyone has been talking about it and nobody gives respect to the cougars. They think that Washington got robbed a victory by the officials.
So after choosing my topic I went to every sports lovers dream; ESPN.com. I spent some time getting to know the views of the sports analysts, fans, and anyone else that would voice their opinion. I also wanted to know the rule that has been getting so much controversial attention this year; the excessive celebration rule. I watched other college football games to see how the officials were enforcing the rule in other games and how it affected the play of the game.
When I was done researching I went to the computer, but not the night before the paper was due. I wanted to get a jump start on it. I had so many ideas that I wanted to get across but I needed to organize them in a way to get my idea across to the reader. After a few days writing I had my first draft.
I took this first draft to the classroom to get it reviewed by my peers. I was excited for them to read it. I got some good feedback and also some good suggestions. Then I had a session with Mr. Keeley and received more insight on how to make my paper even better. Now I just need to take these suggestions and put them into practice. Hopefully I can organize my paper better, have my transitions be smoother, and make my paper the best that it can be.
Believe it or not I have enjoyed this assignment. Writing about something of interest makes the whole difference. Knowing about Ethos, Pathos, and Logos helps put things in perspective and helps organize all the thoughts onto the paper. I am enjoying learning about communication and rhetoric and believe this will help me throughout my life. I have always been scared of writing college papers, but now I have more confidence in my writing and communication skills.

Opinion Editorial

For my opinion editorial I will be talking about the “controversial” call at last week’s Byu verses Washington football game. I will be talking about the new rule instated this year as a “no I in Team” type of rule. My audience won’t only target the sports fans, but also any of those that think BYU needs some long deserved respect. I will be looking at how and why the rule was instated this year and also look at other examples of the call in college football this year and how it is effecting the game and the players.
The timing right now is good (last week would have been the best, but still people are thinking about that Washington game) because now BYU is coming off a big win against UCLA and people are still wondering about the “what if” of the Washington game.

- First I will talk about the game, how BYU dominated and it came down to the end and unfortunately people blame the refs for the Washington loss.
- Next I will talk about the rule, what is the rule, when it was put into effect and why it was put into effect this year.
- Then I will list other examples of the rule being called this year and how it has effected other games and players.
- Finally I will put my argument that the rule is unnecessary, but being that it is a rule it should be called.
Let the kids play!
This should catch the reader’s attention and hopefully bring some good insight to those who don’t know much about the rules and how they changed this year in college football.

GO COUGARS!!!
